General Manager – Heavy Civil / Road Construction
Our client is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead its Heavy Civil/Road Construction Division. This executive leadership role is responsible for the overall performance of the business unit, including P&L, operations, estimating, project execution, safety, client relationships, and team development. The General Manager will oversee a portfolio of roadway and civil infrastructure projects while driving operational excellence and strategic growth.
Responsibilities:
- Provide executive leadership for the Heavy Civil Division, overseeing operations, financial performance, safety, quality, and project execution.
- Own divisional P&L, including revenue, profitability, forecasting, backlog, WIP, cash flow, and financial performance.
- Lead and develop Project Executives, Superintendents, Estimators, and operational leadership.
- Oversee estimating, bidding, contract negotiations, and preconstruction planning for major civil infrastructure projects.
- Ensure successful execution of roadway, highway, bridge, utility, and site development projects from preconstruction through closeout.
- Drive operational consistency, risk management, resource planning, and continuous improvement across the division.
- Build and maintain executive-level relationships with owners, municipalities, DOTs, developers, engineers, subcontractors, and industry partners.
- Partner with executive leadership to develop strategic growth initiatives and expand market presence.
- Champion a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and high performance.
Qualifications:
- 15+ years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction, with significant experience delivering roadway, highway, bridge, utility, or other transportation infrastructure projects.
- Required: Demonstrated leadership experience managing a Heavy Civil/Road Construction business unit, regional operation, or large portfolio of civil infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience with DOT, municipal, state, or federally funded roadway projects.
- Previous experience as a General Manager, Vice President of Operations, Operations Manager, Regional Manager, or equivalent executive leadership role within a heavy civil contractor.
- Strong understanding of heavy civil estimating, project management, scheduling, field operations, equipment management, and construction financials.
- Demonstrated P&L ownership, including WIP, cost-to-complete forecasting, backlog management, cash flow, job costing, claims, change orders, and profitability.
- Proven ability to lead large multidisciplinary teams, including Project Executives, Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators, and Field Operations.
- Strong business development, client relationship management, contract negotiation, and executive communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations, construction safety standards, and quality management.
- Proficiency with construction management software (e.g., HCSS, Procore, Viewpoint, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project) and Microsoft Office.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
